miles & points, explained.

your everyday card spends can quietly turn into free flights and hotels. here's the whole game in 4 short answers — no insider lingo.

what even are points & miles?

every time you swipe your credit card, the bank gives you a little reward — points (or miles, same idea). think of them like arcade tokens: you earn them by spending, then trade them in for stuff. the good stuff here = flights & hotels.

how do i earn them?

just by spending like you already do — groceries, rent, fuel, online shopping, travel. each card gives you a certain number of points per ₹100 you spend. higher earn rate = points stack faster. some cards also drop a big welcome bonus when you hit a spend target in the first few months.

what's the difference between points & miles?

points live with your bank (hdfc, amex, axis…). miles live with an airline (air india, krisflyer…). the magic move is transferringyour bank points into an airline — that's where they're worth the most.

how do points become free flights?

you transferyour bank points to an airline's frequent-flyer program, then book a flight using miles instead of cash. you only pay the taxes (usually a few thousand rupees). the ratio tells you how many bank points = 1 airline mile — e.g. 1:1 means one point gives one mile, 2:1 means you need two points for one mile.

a real example

you spend ₹50,000 / month on an hdfc infinia → roughly 16,000 points / month. in about 5 monthsyou've stacked ~80,000 points. transfer them to an airline and that's a bangkok return flight — you just pay the taxes.

numbers are rough, for the idea. your real earn depends on the card & where you spend.
